🛡️ Safe and Careful

Class 1 EVS · Unit 11 of 11 · about 120 minutes

Children learn to stay safe at home and on the road. They practise crossing the road with an adult, learn the traffic light colours, and know not to touch sharp or hot things. They also learn to tell a trusted adult if something is unsafe.

What your child will learn

  • Students will identify safe and unsafe situations at home and on the road from pictures and simple descriptions.
  • Students will state the rule to cross the road only with an adult and describe the three traffic light colours and their meanings.
  • Students will name sharp and hot things at home and say why they should not touch them.
  • Students will state that they should tell a trusted adult if they see something unsafe or feel scared.

Lessons in this unit

  1. Safe and Unsafe at Home: Children learn to tell safe from unsafe at home: safe like playing with toys, unsafe like touching a hot stove or sharp knife. They learn to tell a trusted adult.
  2. Traffic Lights and Crossing the Road: Children learn the three traffic light colours for cars (red stop, yellow wait, green go) and that people on foot cross only when the cars have stopped: at the zebra crossing, when the walking-person light is green, holding an adult's hand and looking right, left and right again.
  3. Sharp and Hot Things: Children learn to identify sharp things (knife, scissors, blade) and hot things (stove, iron, hot water) and understand why they are dangerous. They learn to stay away and tell an adult.
  4. Telling a Trusted Adult: Children learn who a trusted adult is (parents, grandparents, teacher) and that they should tell them if they see something unsafe or feel scared. They practise saying 'I will tell Mummy' in role-play.

You should keep it a secret if you see something unsafe.
