🖐️ My Body

Class 1 EVS · Unit 3 of 11 · about 120 minutes

Children name the main parts of their body (head, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands, legs) and what each part helps them do. They explore the five senses through simple, safe activities: seeing with eyes, hearing with ears, smelling with nose, tasting with tongue, and touching with skin. They learn that each sense uses a specific body part and that we use our senses to learn about the world around us.

What your child will learn

  • Students will name the main parts of the body (head, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands, legs) and point to them on themselves.
  • Students will state what each main body part helps us do (eyes see, ears hear, nose smells, tongue tastes, hands touch and hold, legs walk and run).
  • Students will match each of the five senses to the correct body part (see–eyes, hear–ears, smell–nose, taste–tongue, touch–skin/hands).
  • Students will use their senses to identify objects by seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, or touching in simple activities.

Lessons in this unit

  1. Name the Parts: Identifying and naming the main external body parts: head, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands, legs. Children point to each part on themselves and on a picture.

  3. Five Senses: Introducing the five senses: seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching. Matching each sense to its body part.
  4. Sense Activities: Applying the senses in simple, safe activities: identifying objects by seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. Emphasizing safety (do not taste unknown things).

What to watch for

The 'head' is only the face.
Help: The head is the whole top part of your body, including your face, hair, and ears.
We smell with our mouth.
Help: We smell with our nose. Our nose helps us know if something smells good or bad.
We taste with our lips.
Help: We taste with our tongue. The tongue has tiny spots that tell us if food is sweet, sour, salty, or bitter.
You can taste something just by looking at it.
Help: Looking at food helps you guess, but you really taste it with your tongue.

Try this at home

  • Point to your head. Point to your hands. Point to your legs.
  • What do you do with your eyes? (see)
  • Match 'see' to 'eyes'
  • Put your hand in the bag. What do you feel? Is it soft or hard?

Quick questions to ask aloud
