🐄 Animals Around Me
Class 1 EVS · Unit 7 of 11 · about 120 minutes
Children observe the animals they see every day at home, on the street and on a farm. They learn to name them, match them to their sounds and movements, identify pets and how to care for them, and show kindness to all animals. Every micro-topic starts from a real observation a Grade 1 child can make.
What your child will learn
- Students will name animals they see at home, on the street and on a farm, and sort them as pets, farm animals or street animals.
- Students will match common animals to their sounds (dog-bow-wow, cat-meow, cow-moo, crow-caw, hen-cluck).
- Students will describe how common animals move (walk, run, hop, fly, swim, crawl) and name the body part used.
- Students will state two ways to care for a pet and one way to be kind to street animals.
Lessons in this unit
- Animals at Home, Street and Farm: Animals the child meets every day: at home (dog, cat, ant, lizard), on the street (cow, crow, pigeon, stray dog), on a farm (buffalo, goat, hen). Sort into pets, farm animals and street animals.
- Animal Sounds: Sounds animals make: dog-bow-wow, cat-meow, cow-moo, crow-caw, hen-cluck, goat-maa. Connect the sound to the animal the child hears at home or on the street.
- How Animals Move: Ways of moving seen around us and the body parts used: walk and run on legs (cow, dog), hop (frog, rabbit), fly with wings (crow, sparrow), swim with fins and tail (fish), crawl on many legs (ant).
- Pets and Their Care: Pets are animals that live with us. They need food, water, a clean place, and love. We must feed them on time, give them water, and take them to a doctor when sick. We should not tease or hurt them.
- Being Kind to Animals: We can be kind to all animals, not just pets. Give water to birds in summer, do not throw stones at street dogs, do not disturb nests, and tell a grown-up if an animal is hurt. Animals are our friends.

Help your child at home
What to watch for
- Only lions, tigers and elephants are 'animals'; cows, dogs and birds are not.
- Help: A dog, a cow, a crow, an ant and a fish are all animals. Animals are all around us, not only in the jungle.
- All animals make the same sound 'bow-wow'.
- Help: Each animal has its own sound. A dog says 'bow-wow', a cat says 'meow', a cow says 'moo'.
- Every bird can fly.
- Help: A hen and a duck fly very little; an ostrich cannot fly at all. Wings do not always mean flying.
- Pets can eat anything we eat.
- Help: Pets need special food. Some human food can make them sick. We should ask a grown-up what to feed them.
Try this at home
- Riya looks out of her window: crow, cow, dog, squirrel. Which live with people, which live on their own?
- Meera hears 'moo' from the street. Which animal is it?
- Fatima watches a frog hop and a fish swim in the pond: which body parts help them?
- Riya has a pet dog. What does she give it every day?
Quick questions to ask aloud
- A squirrel runs up a tree in the school. Is it a pet, a farm animal or a street animal? (street animal: it lives on its own / pet: it lives in the school / farm animal: it eats fruit)
Show answer
street animal: it lives on its own. No one feeds or looks after the squirrel. It finds its own food. So it is a street animal. - Which animal says 'meow'? (cat / dog / cow)
Show answer
A cat says 'meow'. - Which body part helps a fish to swim? (fins and tail / legs / wings)
Show answer
fins and tail. A fish moves its tail and fins to push through the water.
