Common mistakes to watch for

These are mistakes children often make in this class, with a simple way to correct each one.

A family is only parents and children.
A family can also include grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins living together. (Families and Community)
Plants are not living because they do not move.
Plants are living. They grow, need water and food, and make seeds. They just move slowly. (Plants: Parts and Uses)
All birds have the same kind of beak.
Beaks differ: a duck has a flat beak to strain water, an eagle has a hooked beak to tear meat. (Animals and Their World)
Food comes from the market or shop, not from farms.
All food originally comes from farms or from animals. The market is just a stop on the way. (Food, Farming and Cooking)
Tap water comes from nowhere; it is always there.
Tap water comes from a source like a river, well, or reservoir, through pipes. It is not magic. (Water: Sources and Saving)
A kutcha house is not a good house.
A kutcha house is good for many places. It is cool in hot weather and uses materials that are easy to find. Both types are homes. (Houses and Building Materials)
The sun always rises exactly in the east and sets exactly in the west, and it is always exactly east at noon.
The sun rises roughly in the east and sets roughly in the west. At noon, the sun is roughly in the south (in India). For our maps, we use the simple rule. (Travel, Directions and Maps)
All teeth are the same and do the same job.
Teeth have different shapes for different jobs: front teeth cut, side teeth tear, back teeth grind. (Our Body and Health)

A 10-minute daily routine

Short, regular practice is easier to keep up than a long weekend session. One routine that fits into a busy evening:

  • Minutes 1–2, observe: look at one real thing together, such as a plant, the sky, the water tap or a helper in your area, and ask what your child notices.
  • Minutes 3–7, learn: do one short lesson part on MangoMindz, read aloud with pictures.
  • Minutes 8–9, connect: link it to your home, for example “Where does our water come from?” or “Which plant parts did we eat today?”
  • Minute 10, tell or draw: your child tells or draws one thing they learned.

Try this at home

  • Families and Community: Riya's family: parents, sister, grandparents, uncle, aunt, cousin – is it joint or nuclear?
  • Plants: Parts and Uses: Label the parts of a bean plant
  • Animals and Their World: Riya sees a crow with a strong beak eating a chapati. Why is the beak strong?
  • Food, Farming and Cooking: Riya's family buys rice from the market. Where did it come from before that?
  • Water: Sources and Saving: Riya sees a well in her grandmother's village. What is it? How do people get water from it?
  • Houses and Building Materials: Riya sees a house made of mud and straw. Is it kutcha or pucca?

Quick questions to ask aloud

Ask one a day. Let your child answer before you open the answer.

  1. True or false: A family with grandparents, parents, and children living together is a joint family.
Show answerTrue. When grandparents live with parents and children, it is a joint family.
  2. Which part of a plant is usually under the ground? (root / leaf / flower)
Show answerThe root grows down into the soil. It holds the plant and drinks water.
  3. Which bird has a strong, hooked beak to tear meat? (eagle / sparrow / duck)
Show answerAn eagle eats meat, so its beak is hooked and strong to tear flesh.
  4. Who grows the crops in a field? (farmer / vendor / cook)
Show answerThe farmer sows seeds and grows crops in the field.
  5. Arjun sees a step-well in his village. What is special about it? (It has steps to go down to the water / It is a machine that makes water / It is a pond with fish)
Show answerIt has steps to go down to the water. A step-well has steps so people can walk down to reach the water, even when the water level is low.
