🌦️ Earth, Sky and Weather

Class 4 EVS · Unit 10 of 11 · about 160 minutes

Children observe the sky and weather around them: the Sun as a source of light and heat, the changing shape of the Moon, daily and seasonal weather changes, reading a simple weather chart, and how rain connects to the water around us. Every micro-topic starts from a real observation of the sky, the weather, or a puddle after rain.

What your child will learn

  • Students will describe the Sun as a source of light and heat and explain how shadows change during the day.
  • Students will identify the Moon as a natural object that does not make its own light and describe how its shape changes over a month.
  • Students will observe and describe daily weather changes (sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy) and connect them to what they wear and do.
  • Students will read a simple weather chart and record the weather for a week using symbols.
  • Students will describe the water cycle in simple terms (water going up as vapour, clouds forming, rain falling) and connect rain to water sources.

Lessons in this unit

  1. Sun and Shadows: The Sun gives us light and heat. Shadows are formed when the Sun's light is blocked. Shadows change length and direction during the day: long in the morning and evening, short at noon. Observe your own shadow at different times.
  2. Moon and Its Shapes: The Moon is a natural object that does not make its own light; it reflects the Sun's light. The Moon changes shape over a month: new moon (not visible), crescent, half, gibbous, full moon, then back. Observe the Moon on different nights.
  3. Weather Changes: Weather is what the sky and air are like each day: sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, hot, cold. Weather changes from day to day and season to season. We choose clothes and activities based on weather.
  4. Reading a Weather Chart: A weather chart shows the weather for each day using symbols. We can read it to know what the weather was or will be. We can also make our own chart by observing and recording daily weather.
  5. Rain and the Water Cycle: Rain is part of the water cycle. The Sun heats water in rivers, ponds and seas; the water goes up into the air as vapour, too tiny to see. High up, the vapour cools and forms clouds. When clouds get heavy, water falls as rain. Rain fills our water sources.

What to watch for

The Sun moves around the Earth.
Help: The Earth spins, so the Sun appears to move. The Sun stays in one place; our Earth turns.
The Moon makes its own light.
Help: The Moon reflects the Sun's light. It is like a mirror in the sky.
Weather is the same everywhere in India on the same day.
Help: Different places can have different weather on the same day. It may be raining in Chennai and sunny in Delhi.
A weather chart tells the weather for the whole year.
Help: A weather chart usually shows one week or one month. It changes every day.

Try this at home

  • Riya draws her shadow at 8 am, 12 noon, and 5 pm. Which is shortest?
  • Meera sees a thin crescent Moon. What shape will come next?
  • Kabir sees dark clouds. What weather is coming? What should he carry?
  • Look at the chart: Monday ☀️, Tuesday 🌧️. How many sunny days?

Quick questions to ask aloud

  1. When is your shadow the shortest? (at noon / in the morning / in the evening)
Show answerat noon. At noon the Sun is high overhead, so your shadow is very short.
  2. Why does the Moon shine at night? (It reflects the Sun's light. / It makes its own light. / It is a star.)
Show answerIt reflects the Sun's light.. The Moon is like a mirror. It reflects the Sun's light, so we see it shining.
  3. Which symbol shows rainy weather? (🌧️ / ☀️ / ⛅)
Show answer🌧️. The cloud with rain drops shows rainy weather.
