Common mistakes to watch for
These are mistakes children often make in this class, with a simple way to correct each one.
- A small family is not a real family because it has few people.
- A family is people who love and care for each other, no matter how many. (My Family and Friends)
- The left and right hands are the same; it doesn't matter which is which.
- Left and right are different. Your left hand is on the same side as your heart (usually). Practice by raising each hand. (Our Body and Senses)
- All plants are trees.
- Plants can be small like grass, medium like a rose bush, or big like a mango tree. Their size and stem help us tell them apart. (Plants Around Us)
- Only lions, tigers and elephants are 'animals'; cows, dogs and birds are not.
- A dog, a cow, a crow, an ant and a fish are all animals. Animals are all around us, not only in the jungle. (Animals Around Us)
- Everyone eats the same food every day.
- Different families and states eat different foods. (Food We Eat)
- Tap water comes from the tap itself; it is made there.
- Tap water comes through pipes from a tank, a borewell, or a water supply. The tap is just the opening. (Water in Our Life)
- A house is only for sleeping.
- A house protects us from sun, rain, cold, and danger, and gives us a place to eat, play, and rest. (Houses and Shelter)
- Everyone goes to school the same way I do.
- People use different ways depending on where they live. In hills, they may walk or take a bus; near a river, they may use a boat. (Travel and Transport)
A 10-minute daily routine
Short, regular practice is easier to keep up than a long weekend session. One routine that fits into a busy evening:
- Minutes 1–2, observe: look at one real thing together, such as a plant, the sky, the water tap or a helper in your area, and ask what your child notices.
- Minutes 3–7, learn: do one short lesson part on MangoMindz, read aloud with pictures.
- Minutes 8–9, connect: link it to your home, for example “Where does our water come from?” or “Which plant parts did we eat today?”
- Minute 10, tell or draw: your child tells or draws one thing they learned.
Try this at home
- My Family and Friends: Riya lives with her parents and brother. What type of family is it?
- Our Body and Senses: Riya raises her right hand. Which hand is it?
- Plants Around Us: Riya looks at her garden: neem tree, rose shrub, money plant on a stick, tulsi and grass in a pot. Sort them.
- Animals Around Us: Riya looks out of her window: crow, cow, dog, squirrel. Which live with people, which live on their own?
- Food We Eat: List of a day's meals with source (plant/animal) for each item
- Water in Our Life: Riya's house gets water from a tap. Where does the tap water come from? (municipal supply, tanker, borewell)
Quick questions to ask aloud
Ask one a day. Let your child answer before you open the answer.
- True or false: A family with only a mother and a child is still a family.
Show answer
True. A family is people who love and care for each other, even if there are only two. - Which body part do you use to walk? (legs / hands / head)
Show answer
Your legs help you walk, run, and jump. - A tulsi plant is small and has soft green stems. What type of plant is it? (a small plant (herb) / tree / climber)
Show answer
a small plant (herb). A herb is a small plant with soft green stems, like tulsi. - A squirrel runs up the mango tree in Arjun's school. Is it a pet, a farm animal or a wild animal? (wild animal: it lives on its own / pet: it lives in the school / farm animal: it eats fruit)
Show answer
wild animal: it lives on its own. The squirrel finds its own food and shelter and no one looks after it, so it is a wild animal even near a school. - Which food did you eat yesterday that comes from a plant? (Milk / Egg / Apple / Chicken)
Show answer
Apple. An apple grows on a tree, so it comes from a plant.
