🌱 Plants: Parts and Uses
Class 4 EVS · Unit 2 of 11 · about 120 minutes
Children observe the plants around them and learn the jobs of roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds. They explore how seeds travel by wind, water and animals, and discover the many ways we use plants for food, medicine and everyday things. Every micro-topic starts from a real observation in the school garden, kitchen or neighbourhood.
What your child will learn
- Students will identify the main parts of a plant (root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit, seed) and describe the job of each part.
- Students will explain how roots, stems and leaves help a plant get water, food and support.
- Students will describe different ways seeds travel (by wind, water, animals) and give an example for each.
- Students will list plants and plant parts that we use for food, medicine and making things.
- Students will demonstrate care for plants by describing ways to protect and nurture them.
Lessons in this unit
- Parts of a Plant: Identify the main parts of a plant: root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit, seed. Observe a real plant (like a bean or marigold) and label its parts. Understand the basic job of each part: roots hold and absorb water, stem supports and carries water, leaves make food, flowers become fruits, fruits hold seeds.
- How Seeds Travel: Seeds need to move away from the parent plant to get space, water and sunlight. They travel by wind (light seeds with hair or wings, like cotton and drumstick seeds), water (coconut, lotus), and animals (sticky grass seeds that cling to fur and clothes, tasty fruits like mango where animals eat and drop seeds).
- Plants We Eat: We eat many parts of plants: roots (carrot, radish), stems (potato is a stem, sugarcane), leaves (spinach, cabbage), flowers (cauliflower, broccoli), fruits (mango, apple), seeds (rice, wheat, beans). Understand that different parts of the same plant can be eaten.
- Plants for Medicine and Things: Plants give us medicine (tulsi for cough, neem for skin, aloe vera for burns) and materials for things we use (wood for furniture, cotton for clothes, rubber from trees for tyres, paper from bamboo). Understand that many everyday items come from plants.
- Caring for Plants: Plants need care to grow: water, sunlight, good soil, and protection from pests. We can help by watering, not plucking leaves, planting trees, and not littering. Understand that plants are living and need our care.

What to watch for
- Plants are not living because they do not move.
- Help: Plants are living. They grow, need water and food, and make seeds. They just move slowly.
- Seeds can only travel by wind.
- Help: Seeds travel by wind, water, and animals. Coconuts float, and mangoes are eaten by animals.
- Potato is a root.
- Help: Potato is a stem. It has buds called 'eyes' that can grow into new plants.
- Medicine only comes from factories.
- Help: Many medicines are made from plants. Tulsi, neem, and aloe vera are used for healing.
Try this at home
- Label the parts of a bean plant
- Match the seed to its travel method: cotton seed, coconut, mango
- Sort these foods: carrot, potato, spinach, cauliflower, mango, rice into the correct plant part
- Match the plant to what we get: cotton → cloth, neem → medicine, wood → furniture
Quick questions to ask aloud
- Which part of a plant is usually under the ground? (root / leaf / flower)
Show answer
The root grows down into the soil. It holds the plant and drinks water. - Which seed travels by wind? (cotton seed / coconut / mango)
Show answer
cotton seed. Cotton seeds have soft white hair that catches the wind. - What part of the plant is a potato? (stem / root / fruit)
Show answer
Potato is a stem that grows underground. It has 'eyes' that can sprout into new plants.
