🦷 Our Body and Health

Class 4 EVS · Unit 8 of 11 · about 160 minutes

Children explore their own body and health habits: the structure and care of teeth, the journey of food through the body, the importance of clean food and water, and everyday habits that keep us healthy. Each micro-topic starts from a real observation of their own body, their meals, or their daily routine.

What your child will learn

  • Students will identify the different types of teeth (incisors, canines, molars) and describe their functions (cutting, tearing, grinding).
  • Students will describe the journey of food through the body (mouth, food pipe, stomach, small intestine, large intestine) and explain that digested food gives energy and helps us grow.
  • Students will explain why clean food and water are important and identify ways to keep food and water clean.
  • Students will describe healthy habits (brushing teeth twice, washing hands, eating balanced meals, drinking clean water, exercising) and explain how they keep the body healthy.

Lessons in this unit

  1. Teeth and Their Care: Types of teeth (incisors, canines, molars) and their functions; why we have two sets of teeth (milk teeth and permanent teeth); how to care for teeth (brushing twice, avoiding too many sweets, visiting the dentist).
  2. What Happens to Food We Eat: The journey of food: mouth (chewing and saliva), food pipe, stomach (churning and mixing), small intestine (absorption), large intestine (water absorption), and the waste that leaves the body. Digested food gives energy and helps us grow.
  3. Clean Food and Water: Why clean food and water are important for health; sources of clean water (tap, well, filtered, boiled); ways to keep food and water clean (washing hands, covering food, washing fruits and vegetables, boiling water, storing water in clean containers).
  4. Healthy Habits: Daily habits that keep us healthy: brushing teeth twice, washing hands before eating and after using the toilet, eating a balanced diet (including fruits and vegetables), drinking clean water, getting enough sleep, and exercising or playing outdoors.

What to watch for

All teeth are the same and do the same job.
Help: Teeth have different shapes for different jobs: front teeth cut, side teeth tear, back teeth grind.
Food goes directly to the stomach from the mouth.
Help: Food travels down a tube called the food pipe from the mouth to the stomach.
Water that looks clean is always safe to drink.
Help: Clear water can still have germs. Boiling or filtering makes it safe.
Eating a lot of one type of food (like only rice) is enough.
Help: Your body needs different foods: energy foods, body-building foods, and protective foods. Eating only one type is not a balanced diet.

Try this at home

  • Riya bites an apple. Which teeth cut it first? Which teeth grind it?
  • Arjun eats a banana. Trace the path it takes inside his body.
  • Meera's mother boils water before drinking. Why?
  • Kabir wants to be healthy. Which habits should he follow?
