🌦️ Weather and Seasons

Class 3 EVS · Unit 9 of 11 · about 150 minutes

Children observe and describe today's weather (sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, cold) using the sky, wind, clothes and how their body feels. They explore the three main seasons in India (summer, rainy, winter) and the changes they bring to clothes, food, plants, animals and festivals. They learn that the sun gives heat and light, that shade and shadows change through the day, and how to take care of themselves in each season. A 5-day weather chart with symbols ties the unit together.

What your child will learn

  • Students will observe and describe today's weather using the sky, wind, clothes and how their body feels.
  • Students will identify the three main seasons in India (summer, rainy, winter) and describe changes in clothes, food, plants, animals and festivals.
  • Students will choose suitable clothes for each season and explain why (cotton in summer, woollens in winter, raincoat in rain).
  • Students will describe the rainy season: clouds, rain, puddles, frogs, mosquitoes, umbrellas, and the danger of floods.
  • Students will explain that the sun gives heat and light, and observe how shadows and shade change at different times of the day.
  • Students will state and follow safety and care rules for each season (drink water in summer, wear warm clothes in winter, avoid walking in deep water in rain).

Lessons in this unit

  1. Today's Weather: Observing and describing today's weather using the sky (sun, clouds), wind (breeze, strong), clothes (what we wear), and how our body feels (hot, cold, comfortable). Introduce weather words: sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, cold.
  2. Three Seasons in India: The three main seasons in India: summer (hot, dry), rainy (wet, green), winter (cold, dry). What changes: clothes, food, plants, animals, festivals. Use a compare_table to sort.
  3. Clothes for Each Season: Why we wear different clothes: cotton in summer (cool, absorbs sweat), woollens in winter (warm), raincoat in rain (dry). Sort with a compare_table.
  4. The Rainy Season: What happens in the rainy season: clouds bring rain, puddles form, frogs appear, mosquitoes breed, we use umbrellas and raincoats. Too much rain can cause floods, which are dangerous.
  5. Sun, Heat and Shadows: The sun gives heat and light. Shade is cooler because the sun's light does not reach. Shadows change through the day: long in the morning and evening, short at noon. Observe shadows at different times.
  6. Taking Care in Each Season: How to stay healthy and safe: drink water and stay in shade in summer, wear warm clothes and eat warm food in winter, avoid walking in deep water and use umbrellas in rain. Care for animals and plants too.
