➗ Division

Class 4 Maths · Unit 4 of 12 · about 120 minutes

This unit introduces division as equal sharing and grouping, the ÷ sign, and the relationship between division and multiplication. Students will divide 2- and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers, find quotients and remainders, and check their answers using multiplication. The unit builds a strong foundation for fractions and measurement in later units.

What your child will learn

  • Students will be able to interpret division as equal sharing and grouping, and write division sentences using the ÷ sign.
  • Students will be able to divide 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number using the standard algorithm, with and without remainders.
  • Students will be able to find the quotient and remainder in a division problem and express the result as 'quotient R remainder'.
  • Students will be able to check a division result using multiplication (quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend).
  • Students will be able to solve word problems involving division in real-life contexts, choosing the correct operation.

Lessons in this unit

  1. Equal Sharing: Introduce division as sharing equally among a number of groups. Use concrete objects and pictures. Write division sentences with ÷.
  2. Grouping: Interpret division as making groups of a certain size. Differentiate between sharing and grouping. Use the ÷ sign.
  3. The Division Symbol: Learn the ÷ sign, the terms dividend, divisor, quotient, and how to read and write division sentences.
  4. Division with Remainder: Introduce remainders when objects cannot be shared equally. Use concrete objects and pictures. Write answers as quotient R remainder.
  5. Long Division: 2-Digit by 1-Digit: Divide 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. Include remainders.
  6. Long Division: 3-Digit by 1-Digit: Divide 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. Include remainders and zeros in the quotient.
  7. Checking with Multiplication: Use multiplication to check division results: quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend.
  8. Word Problems: Solve real-life word problems involving division, choosing the correct operation and interpreting remainders.

Key words

division
Sharing equally or grouping into equal parts.
divide
To split into equal groups.
÷
The division sign, means 'divided by'.
dividend
The number being divided (the total).
divisor
The number we divide by (the size of each group or the number of groups).
quotient
The answer in division – how many in each group or how many groups.
remainder
What is left over after sharing equally.
equal sharing
Giving the same amount to each person.
grouping
Making groups of a certain size.

What to watch for

Division always makes numbers smaller.
Help: Show that 12 ÷ 3 = 4, and 4 is smaller than 12, but also show 12 ÷ 1 = 12 (dividing by 1 doesn't change).
Sharing and grouping are the same thing.
Help: Sharing: how many in each group? Grouping: how many groups? Use examples to show the difference.
The ÷ sign means 'take away'.
Help: Show that ÷ means sharing equally, not subtracting.
The remainder can be equal to or larger than the divisor.
Help: If remainder ≥ divisor, you can share more. Always check.

Try this at home

  • Share 12 sweets among 3 friends
  • How many groups of 4 can you make from 12?
  • Write division sentence for '12 shared among 3'
  • Share 17 sweets among 5 friends

Quick questions to ask aloud

  1. Riya has 12 sweets and shares them equally among 3 friends. How many sweets does each friend get? (4 / 3 / 6 / 9)
    Show answer12 sweets shared among 3 friends means 12 ÷ 3 = 4. Each friend gets 4 sweets.
  2. How many groups of 4 can you make from 12 stars? (3 / 4 / 2 / 6)
    Show answer12 ÷ 4 = 3. You can make 3 groups of 4.
  3. What does the ÷ sign mean? (divided by / multiplied by / added to / subtracted from)
Show answerThe ÷ sign means 'divided by'. It tells us to share equally.

How does MangoMindz teach "Division"?

In 8 short parts (Equal Sharing, Grouping, The Division Symbol, Division with Remainder, Long Division: 2-Digit by 1-Digit, Long Division: 3-Digit by 1-Digit, Checking with Multiplication, Word Problems). Each part has a picture-based lesson read aloud by Mango Teacher, a quick check, and a quiz built from common mistakes children make, with Mango, a study buddy, for questions.

How long does "Division" take?

About 120 minutes in total, spread over 8 parts of 15–25 minutes each.

How can I help my child with "Division" at home?

Work through a small example together, such as: Share 12 sweets among 3 friends; How many groups of 4 can you make from 12?. Then ask a quick question aloud: Riya has 12 sweets and shares them equally among 3 friends. How many sweets does each friend get? (4 / 3 / 6 / 9)

What mistakes do children often make in "Division"?

Division always makes numbers smaller. Fix: Show that 12 ÷ 3 = 4, and 4 is smaller than 12, but also show 12 ÷ 1 = 12 (dividing by 1 doesn't change). Sharing and grouping are the same thing. Fix: Sharing: how many in each group? Grouping: how many groups? Use examples to show the difference. The ÷ sign means 'take away'. Fix: Show that ÷ means sharing equally, not subtracting.
