🌞 Sun, Moon and Sky
Class 2 EVS · Unit 10 of 11 · about 120 minutes
Children observe the sky during the day and at night: the sun gives light and heat, the moon and stars appear at night, shadows form on sunny days, and air is all around us. They learn to describe changes in the sky, understand why shadows change, and feel and observe air through simple activities.
What your child will learn
- Students will name objects seen in the day sky and the night sky and sort them into day and night.
- Students will state that the sun gives light and heat, and that the moon and stars are seen at night.
- Students will observe and describe shadows formed on a sunny day and relate shadow length to the sun's position.
- Students will demonstrate that air is all around us through simple actions like blowing, fanning, and feeling moving air.
Lessons in this unit
- Day and Night Sky: Observe the sky during the day and at night. Day sky: sun, clouds, sometimes moon faintly. Night sky: moon, stars, sometimes clouds. Sort objects into day and night.
- Sun Gives Light and Heat: The sun is a big star that gives us light and heat. We see it in the day. It helps plants grow and makes the day bright and warm.
- Moon and Stars: The moon and stars appear in the night sky. The moon shines with the sun's light. Stars twinkle. The moon changes shape over the month, but we don't need to learn all shapes.
- Shadows: Shadows are made when something blocks light. On a sunny day, you can see your shadow. The shadow is long in the morning and evening, and short at noon when the sun is overhead.
- Air Around Us: Air is all around us. We cannot see it, but we can feel it when the wind blows. We can blow air, fan air, and see leaves move. Air is needed for breathing.
