🎵 Rhymes and Songs

Class 1 English · Unit 4 of 10 · about 120 minutes

Children hear and say short rhymes and action songs. They find words that sound the same at the end (rhyming words), clap the beat of a rhyme, and say rhymes aloud with actions. This unit builds listening, speaking, and early phonemic awareness through play.

What your child will learn

  • Students will be able to say a short rhyme aloud with actions.
  • Students will be able to identify two words that rhyme from a set of three.
  • Students will be able to clap the beat of a rhyme, one clap per syllable.
  • Students will be able to complete a rhyming line with the correct word.

Lessons in this unit

  1. Hear and say rhymes: Listen to a short rhyme, repeat it, and say it with actions. Focus on the sound of words, not reading.
  2. Find rhyming words: Listen to words and find pairs that sound the same at the end. Use pictures to help.
  3. Clap the beat: Clap one time for each beat (syllable) in a word or line. Use body percussion.
  4. Complete the rhyme: Listen to a rhyme with a missing last word and choose the word that rhymes to complete it.
