Class 1 English · Unit 6 of 10 · about 120 minutes

The unit uses pictures, familiar Indian settings and short sentences to build confidence in speaking and early reading.

Lessons in this unit

- Sorting naming words: Sort naming words into four groups: people, animals, places and things. Use pictures and word cards to build the categories.
- One and many with -s: Understand that adding -s to a naming word makes it mean more than one. Use pictures to show one vs many.
- Using a and an: Use 'a' before naming words that start with a consonant sound and 'an' before naming words that start with a vowel sound. Use pictures to support the sounds.

What to watch for
- Action words like 'run' are naming words because they are in the sentence.
- Help: Naming words name people, animals, places or things. 'Run' is something you do, not a name.
- A thing can be a person if it is alive, like a plant.
- Help: People are men, women, boys and girls. Plants are things, not people.
- Adding -s changes the meaning to 'big' instead of 'many'.
- Help: -s means more than one, not bigger. One cat, two cats.
- Use 'an' before any word that starts with a vowel letter, even if the sound is different.
- Help: We listen to the sound, not just the letter. 'Umbrella' starts with a vowel sound, so we say 'an umbrella'.
Try this at home
- Point to the naming word in a picture
- Sort word cards into the four boxes
- See one cat, see many cats, say 'cat' and 'cats'
