🏃 Action Words
Class 1 English · Unit 7 of 10 · about 120 minutes
Grade 1 children learn to recognise and name common action words (run, jump, eat, sing, etc.), act them out, and use them in simple 'I can ...' sentences. The unit builds oral vocabulary and links words to physical actions, preparing children for sentence writing in later units.
What your child will learn
- Students will be able to name an action when they see a picture or watch someone do it.
- Students will be able to act out an action word when they hear it.
- Students will be able to say a simple sentence using 'I can ...' with an action word.
Lessons in this unit
- Name the action: Introduce common action words with pictures and actions. Children say the word when they see a picture or a friend acting it out.
- Act it out: Children listen to an action word and act it out. This builds a strong link between the word and its meaning.
- I can ...: Children use action words in simple sentences with 'I can ...'. They talk about what they can do.

Help your child at home
What to watch for
- Action words are only for people, not animals.
- Help: Animals can do actions too. A dog can run. A bird can sing.
- Acting out is just playing, not learning.
- Help: Say the word while acting. The action helps you remember the word.
- 'I can' is followed by a thing, not an action.
- Help: After 'I can', we say an action word. 'I can throw a ball.'
- The action word is the same as the thing (e.g., 'eat' is the food).
- Help: The action is what you do. You eat an apple. 'Eat' is the action.
Try this at home
- Look at the picture and say the word
- Listen and do
- Say 'I can ...' and act it out
- Watch the action and say the word
