Hindi matras chart (मात्राएँ) with example words
A matra (मात्रा) is the sign a vowel takes when it joins a consonant: क + ा = का. The vowel अ has no sign because it is already inside every consonant.
Class 1 children learn the matras in small groups, starting with आ, इ and ई. Class 2 children read and write whole words with every matra. This chart shows each matra with its name, its form on क and one word built letter by letter.

How to use this chart at home
- Teach one matra at a time. Say its sound while pointing to it: ा says "aa", as in का.
- छोटी इ (ि) is written before the letter but spoken after it: in दिन the ि comes first on paper.
- Change one matra to change the word: मल → माल → मील → मेल. Ask your child to read each one.
- Build words with letter cards: give क, े, ल, ा and ask for केला.
- Do a short dictation (श्रुतलेख) of three words a day and check them together.

Frequently asked questions
How many matras are there in Hindi?
Ten vowel signs (ा ि ी ु ू ृ े ै ो ौ) plus the marks अनुस्वार (ं), चंद्रबिंदु (ँ) and विसर्ग (ः). अ has no matra.
What is the difference between ि and ी?
ि (छोटी इ) is written before the letter and is short, as in दिन. ी (बड़ी ई) is written after the letter and is long, as in दीदी.
Which matras should a child learn first?
आ, इ and ई first, then उ and ऊ, then ए, ऐ, ओ and औ. ऋ and the marks come last.
