⚠️ Safety and Natural Disasters
Class 5 EVS · Unit 11 of 11 · about 120 minutes
Children learn about common natural disasters in India—floods, earthquakes, cyclones and droughts—at a child-safe level. They observe warning signs, understand what causes these events in simple terms, and practise what to do to stay safe before, during and after each one. The unit also covers helping others, emergency numbers, and the importance of staying calm and prepared.
What your child will learn
- Students will name four common natural disasters in India (flood, earthquake, cyclone, drought) and describe one effect of each on people and places.
- Students will explain in simple words what causes a flood, an earthquake, a cyclone and a drought.
- Students will state and demonstrate the safe actions to take during an earthquake, a flood, a cyclone and a drought.
- Students will describe at least two ways to help people affected by a disaster and show care and sensitivity.
- Students will recall the emergency numbers for police, fire, ambulance and disaster helpline in India and state when to call each.
Lessons in this unit
- What Are Disasters?: Introduce the four common natural disasters in India: flood, earthquake, cyclone, drought. Observe pictures and simple descriptions of each. Understand that disasters are sudden events that cause damage and harm. Discuss that some places are more prone to certain disasters (coastal areas to cyclones, dry areas to drought).
- Why Disasters Happen: Simple causes of each disaster: flood from very heavy rain or rivers overflowing; earthquake from the earth's plates moving and shaking; cyclone from strong winds and low pressure over warm sea water; drought from no rain for a long time. Connect to what children observe: heavy rain, dry season, wind.
- Staying Safe During Disasters: What to do during each disaster: earthquake – drop, cover, hold; flood – move to high ground, do not walk through water; cyclone – stay indoors, away from windows; drought – save water, use it carefully. Also what not to do (run during earthquake, go near fallen wires).
- Helping Others: How children can help after a disaster: share food and water, give clothes, help in relief camps, be kind to those who lost homes, not spread fear. Understand that even small help matters. Discuss how communities come together.
- Emergency Numbers: Important emergency numbers in India: 112 is the one number for any emergency (police, fire, ambulance); 100 police, 101 fire, 108 ambulance (in many states 102 is also an ambulance number). When to call: accident, fire, someone hurt, any danger. How to call: stay calm, give your name, location, and what happened. Prank calls are wrong and punishable.

Help your child at home
What to watch for
- All disasters are caused by people.
- Help: Natural disasters happen because of nature, like heavy rain or the earth shaking. But people's actions can make them worse, like cutting trees causing more flood damage.
- Earthquakes happen because the ground cracks open and swallows things.
- Help: The ground shakes because big pieces of the earth's crust move. Cracks may appear, but the earth does not swallow things.
- During an earthquake, you should run outside immediately.
- Help: Running during shaking can make you fall or get hit by falling things. Drop, cover, hold is safer.
- Only adults can help after a disaster.
- Help: Children can help in many safe ways: sharing, being kind, helping pack relief materials, and not spreading fear.
Try this at home
- Riya sees a picture of a flooded street. What disaster is this? What happens to houses?
- It rained heavily for three days and the river overflowed. What disaster is this? Why?
- During an earthquake, what should Arjun do? Drop, cover, hold.
- After a flood, Meera's family gives old clothes and food packets to the relief camp. How does this help?
Quick questions to ask aloud
- Which disaster is a very strong storm with heavy rain and winds that comes from the sea? (cyclone / earthquake / drought)
Show answer
A cyclone is a huge storm with very strong winds and heavy rain, often coming from the sea. - A long time with no rain causes a ____.
Show answer
When there is no rain for a long time, the land becomes dry and there is a drought. - During a flood, what is the safest thing to do? (move to high ground / walk through the water to reach home / stand near the river to watch)
Show answer
move to high ground. Moving to high ground keeps you safe from rising water.
