🦅 Super Senses

Class 5 EVS · Unit 1 of 11 · about 120 minutes

Children explore how animals use their senses of sight, smell and hearing to find food, avoid danger and communicate. They learn about the special abilities of dogs, eagles, ants, bats and other animals, compare them with human senses, and discover how animals sleep. The unit also introduces the idea of endangered animals and why we must protect them.

What your child will learn

  • Students will describe how animals use their senses of sight, smell and hearing to find food, avoid danger and communicate.
  • Students will compare the senses of different animals (eagle, dog, ant, bat) with human senses and identify special abilities.
  • Students will describe the sleeping patterns of different animals and explain why they sleep at different times.
  • Students will identify some endangered animals and suggest ways to protect them.

Lessons in this unit

  1. Sight Superpowers: How animals use sight: eagles see far, owls see at night, chameleons move eyes separately, and some animals see more colours than us.
  2. Smell Superpowers: How animals use smell: dogs smell with their noses to find people and food, ants follow smell trails, and some animals smell danger.
  3. Hearing Superpowers: How animals use hearing: bats use echolocation to find insects in the dark, dolphins use sound to find fish, and some animals have ears that can turn to hear danger.
  4. Animal Sleeping Patterns: How animals sleep: some sleep at night (diurnal), some sleep during the day (nocturnal), and some sleep standing up or with one eye open.
  5. Endangered Animals: What does endangered mean, with examples like the tiger and the Asian elephant; the one-horned rhino is also at risk (listed as vulnerable) and is protected in Kaziranga; how we can protect them.
