What to watch for

Bigger coin means more money (₹1 coin vs ₹2 coin size confusion) or more coins means more money.
Help: Read the number on each coin. Five ₹1 coins are less than one ₹10 coin.
There is only one right way to make an amount.
Help: Money can be made many ways; all must total the same. ₹45 = 20+20+5 = 10+10+10+10+5.
Change is the note minus nothing, or the price minus the note.
Help: Change = money paid − price. Count up from the price to the note: 65 → 70 (5) → 100 (30), change ₹35.
Cost of 3 pencils is the price plus 3: ₹8 + 3 = ₹11.
Help: Each pencil costs ₹8, so 3 pencils cost 8 + 8 + 8 = 3 × 8 = ₹24.

Try this at home

  • Count ₹100 + ₹50 + ₹20 + ₹5 + ₹2
  • ₹45 in two ways
  • ₹35 + ₹28 + ₹12 total
  • Bill for 3 pencils at ₹8 and 2 erasers at ₹5

Quick questions to ask aloud

  1. Fatima has one ₹100 note, one ₹50 note, one ₹20 note, one ₹5 coin and one ₹2 coin. How many rupees does she have?
    Show answerStart with the largest: 100, then 150, 170, 175, 177. She has ₹177.
  2. Which set makes exactly ₹45? (₹20 + ₹20 + ₹5 / ₹20 + ₹20 + ₹10 / ₹10 + ₹10 + ₹10 + ₹10)
    Show answer20 + 20 = 40, and 40 + 5 = 45. So ₹20 + ₹20 + ₹5 makes ₹45.
  3. A notebook costs ₹35, a pen costs ₹28 and an eraser costs ₹12. What is the total cost?
    Show answer35 + 28 = 63, and 63 + 12 = 75. The total is ₹75.
