Telling time for kids: how to teach your child to read a clock

Children learn to read a clock in steps. In NCERT-based Maths, Class 2 starts with o’clock and half past. Class 3 adds quarter past, quarter to, five-minute steps and a.m. and p.m. Class 4 reads time to the minute and works out how long things take, and Class 5 uses the 24-hour clock and timetables.

Class 2: Clock and Calendar

Read the clock to the hour and half hour, and learn days, months, and calendar dates.

  • Reading time to the hour: Children learn the parts of a clock and read time to the hour: when the minute hand points to 12, the hour hand points to the hour number.
  • Reading time to the half hour: Children learn that when the minute hand points to 6, it is half past the hour, and the hour hand is halfway between two numbers.

Class 3: Time and Calendar

Read the clock and the calendar, and work out how long things take.

  • O'clock and half past: Name the two hands, read o'clock times and half-past times on an analogue clock, and draw the hands for a given time.
  • Quarter past, quarter to and 5 minutes: Count in 5s around the clock, read quarter past and quarter to, and read any time in 5-minute steps (e.g. 6:20, 8:55).
  • a.m., p.m. and my day: Use a.m. for midnight to noon and p.m. for noon to midnight, attach a.m./p.m. to daily events, and order the events of a day on a timeline.
  • How long does it take?: Find the duration between two clock times in whole hours or half hours by counting on, and estimate how long everyday activities take (seconds, minutes, hours, days).

Class 4: Time

Read clocks to the minute, use a.m. and p.m., find how much time has passed, and solve calendar puzzles.

  • Reading time to the minute: Read the time to the minute on an analog clock by counting the minute marks around the clock face, and write it in digital form. and elapsed time.
  • a.m. and p.m.: Understand the 24-hour day divided into a.m. (midnight to noon) and p.m. (noon to midnight). Use a.m. and p.m. in real-life contexts.
  • Minutes in an hour, hours in a day: Know and use the facts: 1 hour = 60 minutes, 1 day = 24 hours. Convert between hours and minutes, and days and hours.
  • Elapsed time: Find the amount of time between a start and an end time, in hours and minutes. Use a number line or clock to count forward.

Class 5: Time and the 24-Hour Clock

Learn to read time in 24-hour clock, find how long things take, and understand days, weeks, months, years, and leap years.

  • Reading the 24-hour clock: Introduce the 24-hour clock as a way to avoid a.m./p.m. confusion. Learn to read times from 00:00 to 23:59, with emphasis on afternoon/evening hours (13:00 to 23:00).
  • Converting between 12-hour and 24-hour clock: Learn the rules for converting: a.m. times (except 12 a.m.) stay the same; p.m. times add 12 (except 12 p.m. stays 12). Practice both directions.
  • Durations across hours: Calculate the time between two given times, including crossing hour boundaries and using both 12-hour and 24-hour formats. Use number lines and subtraction.
  • Reading timetables: Read and interpret timetables (train, bus, school) using 24-hour clock. Answer questions about departure, arrival, and duration.

How to practise at home

  • Keep a clock with hands where your child can see it, and ask the time at fixed moments: breakfast, the school bus, dinner.
  • The short hand shows the hour; the long hand shows the minutes.
  • Count the minutes in fives around the clock: 5, 10, 15 … 60.
  • At half past, the hour hand sits halfway between two numbers, not on the next number.
  • Talk about how long things take: “Lunch starts at 1 o’clock and ends at half past 1. How long is that?”

Common mistakes to watch for

The hour hand points to the number that is the hour, but when it is between numbers, children may read the wrong hour.
Always check the minute hand first: if it is at 12, read the hour hand's number.
Children may read half past 4 as 6 o'clock because the minute hand points to 6.
Remember: minute hand at 6 means half past, and the hour hand tells the hour.
Half past 4 is read as 'half past 5' because the hour hand is between 4 and 5.
The hour hand has not reached 5 yet. It is still 4-something. Half past 4.
When the long hand is on 3, it is 3 minutes past.
Each number is 5 minutes. 3 means 15 minutes: quarter past.
Reading the minute hand as the hour number (e.g., pointing at 9 means 9 minutes).
Count the minute marks from 12. The number 9 is at 45 minutes, not 9 minutes.
12:00 noon is 12:00 a.m.
12:00 noon is 12:00 p.m. because p.m. starts at noon. 12:00 a.m. is midnight.
13:00 is 1:00 p.m. but written as 13:00 p.m.
In the 24-hour clock, we do not use a.m. or p.m. 13:00 already means 1:00 p.m.
12:00 p.m. converts to 00:00.
12:00 p.m. is noon, so it stays 12:00 in 24-hour clock.

Try this at home

  • Class 2: Identify the time shown on a clock
  • Class 2: Draw hands on a clock to show a given hour
  • Class 3: Read 7 o'clock
  • Class 3: Quarter past 2
  • Class 4: Count the minute marks from 12 to the minute hand.
  • Class 4: Label activities with a.m. or p.m.
  • Class 5: Read a digital clock showing 14:25 and say 'fourteen twenty-five'.
  • Class 5: Convert 3:45 p.m. to 24-hour: 15:45.

Quick questions to ask aloud

Let your child answer before you open the answer.

  1. What time is it when the minute hand points to 12 and the hour hand points to 5? (5 o'clock / 12 o'clock / 3 o'clock)
Show answerWhen the minute hand is at 12, we say o'clock. The hour hand points to 5, so it is 5 o'clock.
  2. The short hand points to 7 and the long hand points to 12. What time is it? (7 o'clock / 12 o'clock / Half past 7)
Show answerThe short hand shows the hour: 7. The long hand on 12 means o'clock. It is 7 o'clock.
  3. How many minute marks are there around the whole clock face?
Show answerThere are 60 minute marks around the clock, one for each minute in an hour.
  4. The 24-hour clock starts at ______ (midnight).
Show answerThe day starts at 00:00, which is midnight.

Frequently asked questions

How do I teach quarter past and quarter to?

Split the clock face into four quarters of 15 minutes. Quarter past 3 is 15 minutes after 3 (3:15). Quarter to 4 is 15 minutes before 4 (3:45).

What is the 24-hour clock?

It numbers the hours of the day from 0 to 23, so 3 p.m. is 15:00 and 9:30 p.m. is 21:30. Railway and bus timetables in India use it.

In which class do children learn telling time?

Class 2: Clock and Calendar; Class 3: Time and Calendar; Class 4: Time; Class 5: Time and the 24-Hour Clock. Each of these units is free on MangoMindz.
