How to use this worksheet

  • Do six sums a day rather than all 24 at once.
  • Let your child use fingers, beads or a number line at first. Speed comes later.
  • For sums that cross 10, use the make-ten trick from the box at the top.
  • Check together with the answer key and talk about any mistake: "How did you get that?"

The make-ten trick

To add 8 + 5, split the 5 into 2 and 3. 8 + 2 makes 10, and 10 + 3 is 13. Children who know the pairs that make 10 (1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 + 5) find this quick.
