What to watch for

The first thing heard is always the answer.
Help: Listen to the whole text first, then answer. The answer may come later.
Retelling means repeating the exact words.
Help: Use your own words. The events must be the same, not the words.
Left and right are the same as up and down.
Help: Left is your left hand side, right is your right hand side. On a map, left is to the west.
Do the last step first because it is easier.
Help: Listen for 'first' and 'then'. Do 'first' first.

Try this at home

  • Listen and point to the answer on a picture card
  • Order picture cards before speaking
  • Point to the path on the map while speaking
  • Listen and repeat the directions aloud

Quick questions to ask aloud

  1. Listen: 'The school fair is on Sunday. It will be at the school ground. There will be games and food. The fair starts in the morning.' Where will the fair be? (At the school ground / At the park / At the market)
Show answerAt the school ground. The text says 'It will be at the school ground.' That is the place.
  2. Which retell is best for the story: 'Meera lost her pencil. She looked in her bag. She found it under the desk.'? (Meera lost her pencil. She looked in her bag. She found it under the desk. / Meera found a pencil. She put it in her bag. / Meera lost her pencil. She cried.)
Show answerMeera lost her pencil. She looked in her bag. She found it under the desk.. The best retell keeps all the events in order, even if the words are a little different.
  3. Which word tells you the direction to turn? (left / near / straight)
Show answerleft. 'Left' is a direction word. 'Near' and 'straight' are not turn directions.
