Class 2 English · Unit 1 of 11 · about 120 minutes

Reads original short stories of 40–80 words with understanding: names the characters and the place, tells what happened first, next and last, and says how a character feels. Builds the habit of going back to the text to find answers and of retelling the story in the child's own words.

What your child will learn

  • Students will be able to put three events of a story in the order they happened.
  • Students will be able to say how a character feels using words from the text or picture clues.
  • Students will be able to retell a short story in their own words in three sentences.

What to watch for

Every noun in the story is a character (the ball is a character).
Help: Characters do things: people and animals. The ball cannot do anything.
The event mentioned first in the question is the first event of the story.
Help: Go back to the story. Find 'first' or the top line.
The character feels what the child would feel, not what the story shows.
Help: Look at the picture and the words. The story tells you.
Retelling means reading the story again.
Help: Close the story. Use the frame and the pictures. Your own words are right if the events are right.

Try this at home

  • Read the story and find the people and animals by asking 'who?'
  • Number the events 1-2-3
  • Find the feeling word in the text
  • Model retell with the frame

Quick questions to ask aloud

  1. Read: 'Riya found a puppy in the park. She gave it milk.' Who are the characters? (Riya and the puppy / Riya and the park / The milk and the bowl)
Show answerRiya and the puppy. Characters are the people and animals who do things. Riya finds and gives; the puppy is found. They are the characters.
  2. Which word tells you something happened at the end? (Last / First / Next)
Show answer'Last' means the end. It shows the last event.
  3. Read: 'Meera lost her doll. She cried.' How does Meera feel? (Sad / Happy / Angry)
Show answerSad. She cried. Crying shows she is sad.
