🔁 Patterns

Class 1 Maths · Unit 10 of 12 · about 120 minutes

Children explore and create repeating patterns using shapes, colours, sounds and actions, and extend simple number patterns counting by 1s and 2s. They learn to identify the repeating unit (the 'core') and predict what comes next. This unit builds early algebraic thinking and prepares for more formal pattern work in later grades.

What your child will learn

  • Students will be able to identify and describe the repeating unit in a given pattern of shapes, colours, sounds, or actions.
  • Students will be able to extend a repeating pattern by continuing the sequence for at least two more steps.
  • Students will be able to create their own repeating pattern using shapes, colours, sounds, or actions.
  • Students will be able to continue simple number patterns that count forward by 1s and 2s up to 20.

Lessons in this unit

  1. Repeating Shapes: Identify and extend patterns made with shapes (circle, square, triangle) and colours. Understand the repeating core.
  2. Repeating Sounds and Actions: Identify and extend patterns made with sounds (clap, stomp) and actions (jump, turn). Use body movements to understand patterns.
  3. Number Patterns by 1s: Continue number patterns that count forward by 1s up to 20. Understand that adding 1 each time makes a pattern.
  4. Number Patterns by 2s: Continue number patterns that count forward by 2s up to 20. Recognize even numbers as a pattern.
  5. Creating Your Own Patterns: Use shapes, colours, sounds, or actions to create a repeating pattern. Explain the pattern and check that it repeats.

Key words

pattern
Something that repeats again and again in the same order.
repeat
To do or show something again.
next
The one that comes after.
core
The smallest part of a pattern that repeats.
growing pattern
A pattern that gets bigger each time.

What to watch for

The pattern is the whole sequence, not the repeating part.
Help: Point to the core and say 'this part repeats'.
A pattern must be visual; sounds can't be patterns.
Help: Explain that patterns can be heard and felt, not just seen.
The pattern is just the numbers, not the 'add 1' rule.
Help: Ask 'What do we add each time?' and show the +1 jumps.
Counting by 2s means saying every number, just faster.
Help: Show that we skip one number each time: 2, (skip 3), 4, (skip 5), 6...

Try this at home

  • Show triangle, square, triangle, square, triangle, ?: say the shapes aloud, notice 'triangle, square' repeats, so the next is square.
  • Listen to a pattern and say what comes next
  • Show a number line and count forward
  • Show a number line and count by 2s

Quick questions to ask aloud

  1. What comes next in the pattern? 🔺⭐🔺⭐🔺 (⭐ / 🔺 / 🟩)
Show answer⭐. The pattern is triangle, star, triangle, star. After a triangle comes a star.
  2. Listen: clap, stomp, clap, stomp, clap, stomp. What comes next? (stomp / clap / snap)
Show answerThe pattern is clap, stomp, clap, stomp. After clap comes stomp.
  3. What comes next? 1,2,3,4,__
Show answerWe add 1 each time. 4+1=5.

Frequently asked questions

What will my child learn in "Patterns" (Class 1 Maths)?

Your child will be able to: identify and describe the repeating unit in a given pattern of shapes, colours, sounds, or actions.; extend a repeating pattern by continuing the sequence for at least two more steps.; create their own repeating pattern using shapes, colours, sounds, or actions.; continue simple number patterns that count forward by 1s and 2s up to 20..

How does MangoMindz teach "Patterns"?

In 5 short parts (Repeating Shapes, Repeating Sounds and Actions, Number Patterns by 1s, Number Patterns by 2s, Creating Your Own Patterns). Each part has a picture-based lesson read aloud by Mango Teacher, a quick check, and a quiz built from common mistakes children make, with Mango, a study buddy, for questions.

How long does "Patterns" take?

About 120 minutes in total, spread over 5 parts of 15–25 minutes each.

How can I help my child with "Patterns" at home?

Work through a small example together, such as: Show triangle, square, triangle, square, triangle, ?: say the shapes aloud, notice 'triangle, square' repeats, so the next is square.; Listen to a pattern and say what comes next. Then ask a quick question aloud: What comes next in the pattern? 🔺⭐🔺⭐🔺 (⭐ / 🔺 / 🟩)

What mistakes do children often make in "Patterns"?

The pattern is the whole sequence, not the repeating part. Fix: Point to the core and say 'this part repeats'. A pattern must be visual; sounds can't be patterns. Fix: Explain that patterns can be heard and felt, not just seen. The pattern is just the numbers, not the 'add 1' rule. Fix: Ask 'What do we add each time?' and show the +1 jumps.

Is "Patterns" free on MangoMindz?

Yes. Every lesson part and quiz in "Patterns" is free on MangoMindz, with no ads.
